Deep in the Heart
Proverbs 4:20-27
My son, pay attention to what I am saying; incline your ear to my words. 21 Don’t let them out of your sight, keep them deep in your heart; 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to their whole being.
23 Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life’s consequences. 24 Keep crooked speech out of your mouth, banish deceit from your lips. 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze on what lies in front of you. 26 Level the path for your feet, let all your ways be properly prepared; 27 then deviate neither right nor left; and keep your foot far from evil.
This is actually two different sections, but I put them together today because the first section is a repeat from something before. This does NOT make it less... It is still important! In fact, this says, "incline your ear to my words... Keep them DEEP in your heart."
The next verse then says,
Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life’s consequences.
How many times have you heard, "Just follow your heart!" According to this wisdom, we must make sure our heart is right before we do that. If we haven't put a guard around our heart, we could land in well... If our hearts are not in alignment with HIS wisdom and teachings, than we will not have a good outcome.
I actually like the phrase, "What does your gut say?" better than "what does your heart say?" I think the heart can be deceitful and we need to be careful. Emotions and feelings can throw us off track. This is why we must guard our heart. Make sure it is aligned with HIS thoughts.
Verse 24 must NOT be missed. Crooked speech and lies will catch up with you. Don't think you can keep going and not get caught.
Look ahead, not behind. We learn from what has happened, but we keep moving forward. That is how you find the best place to put your foot and where to step. You can't find where to step when you look behind.
God has a plan and HIS plan is to move you forward. His plan is to keep you from harm. The Words of TRUTH and LIFE in this little section should be DEEP in our hearts. They will bring us HEALTH and well-being.
