Superlatively great PROMISES...
It is always fun to find verses with fun words in them. Today when I opened BibleGateway to put in my verse, this one was there and I chose it instead.
2 Peter 1:3-4
God’s power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through our knowing the One who called us to his own glory and goodness. By these he has given us valuable and superlatively great promises, so that through them you might come to share in God’s nature and escape the corruption which evil desires have brought into the world. (CJB)
Reading the whole chapter and understanding the context the verses are written is always helpful. These verses are Peter encouraging the communities of faith to understand the blessings God has given them.
God’s POWER is the first one. It is clear that we have EVERYTHING we need for LIFE and godliness. Because we know the ONE Who has called us HIS OWN and has given us HIS glory and goodness, we now have ALL we need!
Here is the fun word… HE has given us VALUABLE and SUPERLATIVELY great PROMISES!
Superlatively is a great word. I looked up the definition:
Of the highest order, quality, or degree; surpassing or superior to all others.
Do you BELIEVE you have the POWER from God? Do you BELIEVE you have the SUPERLATIVELY great PROMISES? Do you BELIEVE you have the HIGHEST QUALITY from the ONE who loves you?
The question then is, WHY do we need these things? WHY should we BELIEVE in them?
Because we can ESCAPE the corruption! We can ESCAPE the EVIL DESIRES that have come into the world!
We can FIGHT the desire to gossip. We can FIGHT the desire to tell a lie. We can FIGHT the desire to fall into a trap of darkness.
These are WORDS we NEED to LIVE by. These are WORDS we need to HIDE deep in our heart. KNOW that you have HIS POWER and EVERYTHING for LIFE!
Claim them! BELIEVE them!
