Like a child...
Matthew 18:1-7
At that moment the talmidim (disciples/students) came to Yeshua and asked, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” 2 He called a child to him, stood him among them, 3 and said, “Yes! I tell you that unless you change and become like little children, you won’t even enter the Kingdom of Heaven! 4 So the greatest in the Kingdom is whoever makes himself as humble as this child. 5 Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me; 6 and whoever ensnares one of these little ones who trust me, it would be better for him to have a millstone hung around his neck and be drowned in the open sea! 7 Woe to the world because of snares! For there must be snares, but woe to the person who sets the snare!
The disciples were just coming off of some tough to hear Words from Jesus. They had been told they did not have enough trust, that Jesus was going to die and be raised again, and that they needed to pay their taxes. I'm sure they were all pondering many things and had a lot spinning in their heads.
All of that caused the disciples to come to Jesus and ask Him, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?" Obviously their minds were still in places that maybe they shouldn't be. They were still thinking of "greater things."
My mind today is on the child that Jesus pulled from the crowd. I wonder what went through that child's mind when Jesus chose him/her. I'm sure their little heart was filled with joy and peace.
With the "saveourchildren" campaign happening today, we should remember the Words of Jesus. Caring for those whom HE loves and adores should be our highest calling. Making a way for them where there seems to be no way is important. Keeping our eyes and ears alert to our surroundings is key in our society today. We need to bring joy and peace to as many children as we can.
The last line is also key today. "For there must be snares..." Jesus makes sure the disciples understand that there will be snares. In fact, He says, "there MUST be..." No one likes snares. No one enjoys getting caught in them. It is why we must be ALERT and focused at all times.
These simple words from Jesus carry a lot of weight. Being humble like a child does not mean to act like a child. It simply means we must find ourselves humble and filled with anticipation, but alert and ready like an adult should be. Once again, it is balance.
Stop today and ask yourself if you are humble as a child. The ask yourself if you are alert and ready to take care of those He brings your way. Don't get caught in the snares of the world. Let His Word be your guide.
